Key to Communication Part 1: Rhythm and Proactive Speech

Over 90% of communication is verbal. You have so many ways to connect with your audience non verbally, but have you considered how your verbal performance affects your nonverbal communication? What if you had a way that was a cheat to better communication for both nonverbal and verbal? We are going to explore rhythm and Proactive Speech as keys to communication.

First, let’s talk about the 7 characteristics of Proactive or Rhythmic Speech. Each of these characteristics are also techniques and strategies for speaking, that we teach in the self study, coaching sessions, and our Udemy course, featured here.

  • Voice Inflections are the ways that you modulate your voice using timber and tone.

  • Word and Thought Finishing, Trailing or Completion. This is simply finishing your thoughts and communicating to completion.

  • Word Extensions. Extending your words is a way to make your speech smoother and gives you time to formulate your next sentences. This is a great tool for those with too fast speech or those who have choppy speech.

  • Word Connections. Extending and connecting words is another tool to create smoother speech. Connecting your words helps your listener understand the importance of phrases.

  • Voice and Body Synchronization. Synchronizing your voice and your body is a huge part of communication. The best way to make your voice and body communicate the same message is to practice modeling.

  • Reverse Swimming. Reverse swimming is an exercise specifically designed and proprietary to the Pro90d courses to better your rhythm as a speaker.

  • Over Articulation. Over articulating your speech makes it much easier for your listener to follow what you are communicating.

Each of these strategies on their own will give you smoother speech, but when used in concert, under the direction of a coach or course work, they can dramatically change the way you are perceived. These not only include tone and timbre, but also the way you move your body and connect your words. One way to start using some of these exercises on your own is to begin by modeling.

Modeling means finding someone whose speech you admire and who demonstrate these speaking characteristics, and imitating him or her.  Pretend to be them.  Find someone that has numerous videos and audios for you to listen to and study.  Take one of those videos and audios and memorize it, then practice presenting it just as if you were that person.

Using these techniques without a coach and lots of practice yields results, but when you use our training methodologies, in the order we teach them, you experience noticeable results only a few months. If you are considering learning more about proactive and Rhythmic speech and strategies, we encourage you to take the Udemy course first, then self study or coaching to accelerate your learning. Great speakers can be born, but often they are made. Learn to communicate more effectively with these keys and more. Next week we will be discussing in greater detail inflection and connecting words as strategies to stop stuttering. Stay tuned!
