In the past two years, we have witnessed our interactions drastically change. For those of us with speech fluency problems, it has presented immense challenges to our communication. With so much communication going online, if we have speech challenges, like stuttering, we might be even more challenged to get our point across. Luckily, there is good news. Pro90d offers online coaching and self-study programs that teach you how to stop stuttering everywhere, and most importantly for this exercise, how to stop stuttering on the phone.
Do you get nervous everytime you pick up the phone? Do you feel that people think less of you for how you communicate on the phone? Have you ever just bombed a phone interview because of stuttering? We know, we have been there too. Here are some of our top tips for phone communication and how to stop stuttering on the phone.
1. Modeling. You better work (at modeling). This iconic catchphrase really applies when it comes to stopping stuttering and modeling. This is how modeling works. You choose someone who is a speaker and then model your speech after them. Take your time in finding your subject, but is crazy because modeling really really works, on the phone, in the shower, any time you need to present clear information, modeling is your go to.
2. Mirror Work. Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the smoothest speaker of them all? You can be if you practice modeling in the mirror for fifteen minutes a day. We are not kidding, modeling in the mirror prepares you for phone conversations. In fact, we recommend that you face a mirror prior to or during your call to gain confidence prior to speaking.
3. Meditation. Breath in and out, your mantra is I am a smooth speaker. Now believe it! Breathing exercises are some of the most valuable tools we teach at Pro90d. They help you relax, envision yourself smoothly speaking, and really nailing interviews and important conversations.
4. Plan Ahead. Practice (and planning) Make Perfect. Always plan ahead when you have important speaking engagements on the phone. Do an IT check to make sure you have proper service, have a mirror near by, and that you are well rested and ready to take your time and speak more smoothly.
In adult stuttering situations, we really need to remember so much of the disfluency is situational. If you are stuttering and nervous, sometimes you are unprepared and caught off guard. Slow down, mirror up, and start communicating more smoothly.
